Big Boot Stoodts, an undergraduate capstone team at the University of Utah, wanted to conduct a competitor analysis on the Untitled Goose Game (Version 1.0.2). The primary user researcher, S. Brian Zavala, performed an observational playtest using the game on September 29th, 2019 to assist in this analysis.

The primary researcher recruited four participants who showed interest in the Untitled Goose Game. The user researcher personally asked these participants to partake in this playtest study. The strategy in selecting participants was to make sure that these playtesters hadn't experienced or seen gameplay of the selected game. The researcher confirmed the desired criteria on the day of playtesting.

The location of the study occurred at the Marriott Honors Community at the University of Utah on a single laptop device. The investigator used OBS to record the faces and gameplay of the participants. The playtest occurred on September 29th, 2019.
For each participant, the user researcher followed a guide before conducting the playtest which steps covered the following questions.
  1. What is the purpose of the study?
  2. Why you're being filmed?
  3. How will your footage (or data) be used?
  4. Do you still consent to participate in the study?

To ensure that the goal of the study was met, the user researcher followed specific steps necessary to conduct a successful observation playtest. The steps served as rules and were listed as followed.
  1. Begin by following the questionnaire guide informing the participant about the purpose of the study and how it will be conducted.
  2. Make sure to confirm the consent of the participant before conducting the playtest.
  3. Refrain from conversing with the playtesters and avoid answering questions about gameplay if possible.
  4. Time the playtest and make sure it is around twenty minutes. Don't end the playtest immediately until the player is not doing something impactful in gameplay (what is and isn't impactful is determined by the administrator of the playtest).
